Responsibilities
- Verifies the receipt of tissue specimens with necessary patient information and preps specimens for gross dissection according to laboratory protocols
- Assists Pathologist/Pathologist Assistant with gross dissection and frozen section procedures
- Verifies, receives, logs, prepares and processes cytology samples for testing and analysis
- Prepares microscopic slides for patient diagnosis to include: tissue processing, embedding and tissue orientation, sectioning of tissue blocks with preparation of microscopic slides, staining and submission of slides to Pathologist for diagnosis and report
- Performs procedures within the scope of the histologist to include special staining procedures, send outs (ie. muscle biopsies, Oncotech, FNA/Flow Cytometry) and various other special procedures.
- Role models through professional development continuous learning and improvement of competence in the practice of histology
- Notifies Pathologist of scheduled frozen sections
- Orders and maintains level of laboratory supplies
- Earns continuing education units mandatory for licensure
- Attends mandatory in-services provided by MicroPath Laboratories
- Follows established safety and biohazard procedures utilizing universal/standard precautions at all times.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned
Requirements
Florida State Histologist License
All the criteria based duties and standards within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department.
